FAQs
What is Forest School?
Forest School is a child-centred learning process that encourages children to explore the natural environment. It aims to develop confidence, self-esteem, risk-taking, problem-solving and many other aspects through hands-on learning in woodland environments.
Where are the sessions?
Forest Folk Play is based in Sherwood, Nottingham. Sessions run from the Scout Hut at Blackwoods on Hucknall Road. The entrance to the site is to the right of the beautiful old gates before the Hucknall Road/Valley Road roundabout. These are accessible by foot or by car (if you have a parking ticket).
What is the address?
Cavendish Blackwoods Scout Hut, 479 Hucknall Road, Nottingham, NG5 1FW
What happens at your sessions?
At Forest Folk Play, we provide a wide variety of fun and engaging activities, each aimed at allowing children to play and discover the world around them. Our sessions are open-ended and child-initiated, meaning that there are no limits to where children can go and what they can discover!
At each session, children can have a go at whittling, fire lighting, and using a variety of tools; they will also have the opportunity to visit our campfire – where we’re always cooking up tasty treats.
What ages are your sessions for?
Our sessions are for all ages. Many children under 5 attend, and we have baby sensory activities catering for our tiny Forest Folk. We also welcome many home-educated children of all ages. Our weekend sessions are a great opportunity to bring along the whole family!
Do the sessions go ahead in all weathers?
We run sessions in all weathers. We love to promote outdoor play throughout the seasons! The woodland canopy provides some shelter from the rain, and we use tarpaulins for extra shelter if needed. We will only cancel sessions if the wind speed is too high or there is heavy snow forecast.
Is there parking?
There is limited parking on-site, so please ensure you have purchased a parking ticket via the website if you wish to park. You can also park on the bus lane outside the main gates.
Are there toilets?
Yes! We have toilets on site in the Scout Hut, including baby changing.
What should we wear?
Please ensure you and your child are dressed appropriately for the weather. As we are based in woodland, we recommend wearing wellies, thermal boots or walking boots. In the autumn and winter months, layers are essential to help keep you warm! We suggest packing a waterproof all-in-one or a waterproof coat (even if the sun is shining when you leave!). Please be advised that there is mud, paint and water to play with, so don’t wear anything precious.
Is it wheelchair accessible?
Nearly all of the woodland is accessible by wheelchair. There is a disabled toilet, which is accessed by the side of the Scout Hut via a ramp.
